Overview


A licence to drive a prime mover to which is attached a single semi-trailer plus any unladen converter dolly, or rigid motor vehicle attached to a trailer that has a gross vehicle mass greater than 9,000 kg plus any unladen converter dolly.

During this course you will learn how to;

  • Maintain systematic and efficient control of all vehicle functions
  • Couple and uncouple trailers
  • Monitor traffic and road conditions
  • Manage vehicle condition and performance
  • Effectively manage hazardous situations
  • Apply precautions and required action to minimise, control or eliminate identified hazards
  • Check and replenish fluids and carry out lubrication processes
  • Complete relevant documentation
  • Monitor and anticipate traffic hazards and take appropriate action
  • Monitor performance of vehicle, its trailers and its equipment and take appropriate action as required
  • Operate and adapt to differences in equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Read and interpret relevant instructions, procedures, information and signs
  • Report and/or rectifying identified problems, faults or malfunctions promptly, in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures.

  • Pre-operational checks carried out on heavy-combination vehicle and related action
  • Principles of operation of air brakes and procedures for their use
  • Principles of stress management when driving a vehicle
  • Relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) and environmental procedures and regulations
  • Relevant state/territory road traffic authority road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements
  • Workplace driving and operational instructions.

Entry Requirements


In order to gain an HC class licence, you must have held both:
  • A Car (C class) licence for at least 3 years, and
  • An Medium Rigid (MR class) or HR class licence for at least 1 year.
Although you can start learning to drive;
  • On attaining your Medium Rigid (MR class) licence, or
  • Heavy Rigid (HR class) licence.
